Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) or Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint TMJ, which connects the jawbone to the skull. TMD can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw, face, and neck, as well as difficulty with chewing, speaking, and opening and closing the mouth. Some may also experience a clicking sound while opening and closing the jaws.

The causes of TMD can vary, but it is often related to issues with the muscles and/or joint of the jaw.

This can be due to:

1. Misalignment of Teeth/Jaw

2. Teeth grinding/clenching

3. Stress

4. Injury

5. Arthritis

Symptoms of TMD can include:

1. Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint or muscles of the jaw

2. Difficulty or discomfort while opening or closing the mouth

3. Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth

4. Aching pain in the face or neck

5. TMJ Headaches

6. Earaches or ringing in the ears

7. Jaw muscle stiffness or spasms

8. Locking of the Jaw

Treatment of TMDS:

There are a variety of treatment options for TMD. Depending on the severity and underlying cause of the condition, our TMJ Specialist will guide you for the best approach. Some of which are:

1. Self-care measures such as avoiding hard or chewy foods

2. Applying heat or cold to the affected area

3. Practicing stress-reducing techniques

4. Physical therapy or jaw exercises to improve jaw mobility and reduce muscle tension

5. Nightguard or splints/deprogrammers for TMJ to protect the teeth and TMJ from grinding/clenching

6. Correction of teeth alignment using braces or Invisalign aligners

7. Surgery in severe cases where other treatments have not been effective
