Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct a wide range of skeletal and dental irregularities of the jaw and face.
The surgery is often recommended for people with severe misalignment of the jaws, facial asymmetry, or obstructive sleep apnea caused by the position and/or size of the jaw, deep overbite or underbite.
The surgery involves repositioning of the jaws to its desired position. The requirement of single or double jaw surgery depends upon the amount of discrepancy.
The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and may require a hospital stay of a few days.
